Old SA flag flies in Ghana

07/02/2008 14:36

Johannesburg - South Africa's soccer hierarchy have appeared not to notice that for the past two
weeks at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana, posters lining the streets of Kumasi are adorned with
images of the old South African flag promoting Bafana Bafana.

It's bad enough that the main image on the posters is that of Benni McCarthy, who was not even selected
for the Bafana Bafana squad - but the old apartheid flag should have triggered protests.

Over the past fortnight there have been 2010 Soccer World Cup presentations in Ghana, with SA Football
Association vice-president Mwelo Nonkonyana asserting that South Africa "will win the World Cup" in two years.

But no one complained about the official tournament posters.

Official sponsor of the event, cellphone giants MTN, have their logo sitting "proudly" next to the old flag.

According to the Cape Times, after being contacted, MTN head office requested a copy of the photograph
before commenting.
